6 Must Read Books For New Business Owners

Updated: Jan 23

I LOVE to get my nose into a good book, I'm a self-confessed book worm. I'll read anything from the faraway lands in a fictional world or straight into someone else's business mindset with a non-fiction.

In fact, I've been known to have two books on the go. During the day, when I need a break from my laptop screen or calls, I tend to read non-fiction books with a business focus. For me, this is a productive rest time and keeps me learning, plus I LOVE hearing the business journeys of other people. It helps me put to things in perspective and is so inspiring. Then, in the evenings and weekends, I love to read a fiction - just to help me unwind and relax and generally shut out the distractions of everyday life.

Here are some books that I've read recently and I thought they were teeming with inspiration, creativity, thinking points and guidance that could really benefit new business owners.

Mindset by Dr Carol S. Dweck

Dweck explains why it's not just our abilities and talent that bring us success-but whether we approach them with a fixed or growth mindset. She makes clear why praising intelligence and ability doesn't foster self-esteem and lead to accomplishment, but may actually jeopardize success. With the right mindset, we can motivate our kids and help them to raise their grades, as well as reach our own goals-personal and professional. Dweck reveals what all great parents, teachers, CEOs, and athletes already know: how a simple idea about the brain can create a love of learning and a resilience that is the basis of great accomplishment in every area.

Untamed by Glennon Doyle

Part inspiration, part memoir, Untamed explores the joy and peace we discover when we stop striving to meet the expectations of the world, and instead dare to listen to and trust in the voice deep inside us. From the beloved New York Times bestselling author, speaker and activist Glennon Doyle.

For many years, Glennon Doyle denied her discontent. Then, while speaking at a conference, she looked at a woman across the room and fell instantly in love. Three words flooded her mind: There. She. Is. At first, Glennon assumed these words came to her from on high but soon she realised they had come to her from within. This was the voice she had buried beneath decades of numbing addictions and social conditioning. Glennon decided to let go of the world's expectations of her and reclaim her true untamed self.

Soulful and uproarious, forceful and tender, Untamed is both an intimate memoir and a galvanising wake-up call. It is the story of how one woman learned that a responsible mother is not one who slowly dies for her children, but one who shows them how to fully live. It is also the story of how each of us can begin to trust ourselves enough to set boundaries, make peace with our bodies, honour our anger and heartbreak, and unleash our truest, wildest instincts.

Untamed shows us how to be brave. And, as Glennon insists, 'The braver we are, the luckier we get.'

The Gift by Dr Edith Eger

In the end, it's not what happens to us that matters most - it's what we choose to do with it. We all face suffering - sadness, loss, despair, fear, anxiety, failure. But we also have a choice; to give in and give up in the face of trauma or difficulties, or to live every moment as a gift. Celebrated therapist and Holocaust survivor, Dr Edith Eger, provides a hands-on guide that gently encourages us to change the imprisoning thoughts and destructive behaviours that may be holding us back.

Have you read any of these? What did you think? I'm always looking for book recommendations, give me a shout and let me know what's on your must-read list!!
